With so many sappy love movies coming to theaters lately, it was about time that a gory action movie hit the big screen. All the trailers looked promising, critic reviews were good, and the previous three installments in the Resident Evil saga have all been worth the wait, so the fourth movie, Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D, hit box offices with a bang, removing the Takers from its number one spot.
Though the movie continued to drift far from the book and video games when it came to the plot. However, it still included characters from the novels such as Claire, Chris Redfield, and Albert Wesker. Sticking to the hopeless apocalypse dynamic of the third movie, Resident Evil: Extinction, the world seems to have even less surviving humans than before and Alice must find whatever is left of the convoy she abandoned in Extinction and attempt to save the human race and the little remains of her sanity, all while battling the head of Umbrella Cooperation. Albert Wesker, his guard of training undead, and the mindless but much more dangerous (and grotesque) creatures wandering the Earth prove to be fair opponents to Alice in this thrilling third feature.
The amount of gore is kept to a minimum despite the mutilated corpses that once dominated the previous movies. The new movie is limited to a splash of blood or a bullet through the skull. The bullets that seem to be shot right at the audience are a bonus but not really worth the extra charge since few things in the movie are actually in 3-D.
Overall, the movie was worth the wait. It could have used some more depth to the plot, but the reunion with her brother, the desperation of several helpless people, and the twisted mind of Wesker all mix well with Alice’s refusal to let Umbrella win.
