Fame, the musical, has arrived at Summit High School. Based in the 1980’s, it is about a diverse group of students who are attending the New York High School of Performing Arts. It shows the hard, laborious work that they have to do in order to acheive their goals as dancers, singers, or actors. The main characters that are followed throughout the musical are Serena, Nick, Tyrone, Carmen, Iris and Joe. Each character has their own dream that they want to follow and make come true.
“We picked the play because there was a widespread interest with the film being out, there are also a lot of really cute musical numbers and acting with a lot of meat around it,” Ms. Simmons, the performing arts teacher, said.
This year the drama club has decided to make the play come from the big screen back to the “small screen.” Open auditions are being held, Sept. 29-Oct. 1. From there, the choices will be narrowed down.
“Right now we have about 65 students who have signed up to audition for the musical,” Ms. Simmons said.
With many students auditioning for the play, anticipation on who will get the part is building up. Each part requires tons of practice and hard work in order to make sure the parts are nailed. There are so many students who have their hearts set on getting the role of thier choice.
“I really hope I get the part. I know I’ll have to practice all the time, since I have to get all the songs down. It’ll be difficult and I’ll have to study, study, study but its worth it,” Austin Baucom said.
Some students who have chosen to try out picked a certain character because they felt a bond with them. Others chose their character because they felt as if the part was perfect for what they wanted, such as a large or small part.
“I tried out for Nick, because he has similar characteristics as me. I like the way I’m able to express myself when being the character,” Baucom said.
Some people are looking forward to performing in a different kind of play than they are used to.
“The play is fun, in the sense that it’s about high school. Most of the plays we usually do aren’t about high school, so it’s great that we get to basically be ourselves,” Baucom said.
