This school year has been a time of many firsts for Summit. It’s the first year that Summit’s had five bad weather days in one winter, first time the AP’s have seriously tried to enforce our I.D. and dress code policies, and Summit ACADEC has won Regionals and qualified for state for the first time in Summit history. ACADEC has studied hard and won the ACADEC 4A regional competition, making them the first MISD team ever to win and advance to state.
“I am so proud of our team this year,” ACADEC sponsor Mrs. Atkinson said. “They all worked very hard to make this a succesful year, and we accomplished our goal. I’m excited to see how we’re going to do at state because this will be our hardest competition yet.”
Each year the U.S. ACADEC association chooses a theme that every school will study extensively based in 10 different subjects. The subjects are Music, Economics, Art, Math, Social Science, Super Quiz, Language and Literature, Speech, Interview, and Essay. This year the theme was the Great Depression, and ACADEC spent all year learning important facts and even random facts to prepare them for the big tests at regionals.
“By now, the Great Depression has gotten boring to mostly all of us, but we can all find a section of it that we really enjoy,” senior Allison Ninedorf said. “My favorite section this year is the Super Quiz because we learned a lot about how the Dust Bowl during during the great depression was just a part of the rock cycle.”
There are nine people on the ACADEC team including the two alternates. At competition the 6 highest scores on each test that the team takes in the individual subjects gets counted to make the total score which is used to place each team. Summit’s score was the highest it’s ever been in the school’s history, which put them in 1st place at Regionals and ranked 12th in the state.
“My favorite part of Regionals was winning all the medals,” senior Hasan Sumdani said. “It was great to study as hard as I possibly could and then get to the tests at Regionals and then just know the answers.”
Sumdani was the highest scoring member of the ACADEC team, winning out medals. Summit had students win medals in all subjects. Now, they are studying hard every day preparing for the state competition this Feb. 25th – 27th in San Antonio. Their goal is to place in the top five teams in the state, and if they place 1st they will advance to the national competition.
“You have to value ACADEC more than just getting a good grade,” Ninedorf said. “You have to be able to come together and work as a team because in the end it’s not just the highest scorer that moves ahead. It’s all of us, or none at all.”
