With the majority of Summit students choosing their schedules for next year there might be a new class on everyone’s line of sight. The Summit ACADEC team has made a new name for themselves throughout this year as a team that people want to be on. With their win at regionals, and now their latest accomplishment, winning 16th place in the 4A state ACADEC competition.
“I’m really excited about how we did at State,” sponsor, Mrs. Atkinson said. “Our score improved by a good amount, everyone did their best, and we all had fun. That’s all I asked of them.”
ACADEC traveled to San Antonio from Feb. 25 – 27, where they competed in two days of rigorous seven hour competition. Their days started early in the morning with study time and ended at night after a long day of brain work. Staying at the Omni Hotel helped, aside from the fire alarm that took the team away from their studying at 1:30 a.m.
“The first night we were at the competition a fire alarm went off in the middle of our studying and freaked us all out,” Cara Bailey said. “The first thing we all grabbed was our ACADEC binder because we’re awesome dedicated kids.”
During the competition the team competed using the knowledge they’d accumulated throughout the year. In the end, the teams total score improved by 1300 points. Individually, the Super Quiz Relay team won 5th which is the highest rank ever achieved by a Summit team. Also, Cara Bailey won first place in the Essay portion of the competition.
“I had my best scores ever, but it wasn’t enough to win a team first place,” Hasan Sumdani said. “I think we all did great. I wish I had another year so that we’d hopefully make it to State again and get another chance.”
Even though the ACADEC competition season is over for this year, the team has already started preparing for next year. They’re awaiting the theme for next year’s studying. Also, the team is searching for new members. ACADEC is currently only open to juniors and seniors, but in the next few years sponsors are considering opening it up to sophomores as well. There’s a process hopeful members must go through involving an application, and interview. So as the year winds down, ACADEC just keeps moving forward with high hopes for next year.
