Summit JROTC battalion is celebrating its second year of victory with its leadership team advancing to the Army JROTC Leadership Bowl and Symposium this coming June 24-28. The team is composed of four members that will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete against 39 of the other top JROTC battalions in the country.
“I’m really excited that we get to go to Washington D.C,” Ballal Qazi said. “My goal is for us to place and come back and make Sergeant Major jump out of his seat in excitement because we’ve won a big trophy to help fill up the JROTC trophy case with more than it can hold.”
The cadets didn’t just get this trip handed to them. There were two rounds that they had to take online tests in and those scores were used to determine the final team placements for who would be advancing to the third and final round. The tests included the concepts of the George C. Marshall Principles of Leaderships, the JROTC leadership theory, winning colors theory and application, and thinking maps. The cadets traveling to Washington, D.C. this year include Wesley Galbraith, Steven Shotkoski, Ballal Qazi, and Mariah Zielke.
“I’m proud to say that we’re going,” Steven Shotkoski said. “The tests weren’t that bad to me, but I don’t want to underestimate what it will be like in Washington D.C. so we’re starting to study now to prepare.”
It won’t be all fun and games in Washington D.C. this summer. The cadets will spend the majority of the days in a rigorous competition that will test over the same concepts that were on the test, but it’s expected to be more in depth to test true understanding. Part of their days will also be spent traveling into Washington D.C. and visiting historical landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial. The final night will have an awards dinner for all the participating battalions where they will announce the winners of the leadership bowl.
“I actually did jump out of my seat when we got the e-mail that said our leadership team was chosen for this opportunity,” Sergeant Major said. “I’m really proud of the cadets and even though I’m not going, I know they will represent well.”
Summit JROTC Jaguar Battalion is the first battalion ever in MISD history to earn a place in this national competition. It is an accomplishment that only 40 total schools out of over a 1000 in the country can say they will do this year, and Summit can only wish the cadets the best as this school year winds down and the summer competition gets closer and closer.
