Eleven UIL Academics teams will be competing at the regional meet on April 15-16 for the opportunity to advance to state. The categories people qualified in included calculator applications, computer science, journalism, informative speaking, Lincoln Douglas debate, mathematics, persuasive speaking, and biology. The UIL team members will travel to Abilene Texas to Harindin-Simmons University for the upcoming competition.

“I’m really excited to go to regionals this year since I didn’t do very well last year,” UIL Academic Team president, Hasan Sumdani, said. “It’s my senior year, so I’m out to make it to state this year.”

The members of UIL that have advanced to regionals are all working towards a goal to make it to the state competition. In order to qualify for state a team or an individual must have a high enough score in their competition to put them in one of the top three places.

“UIL is fun because you get to specialize in stuff and it gives you a better chance of doing good and placing,” Daniel Troung said.

There are 21 total UIL Academics events, and in the history of Summit it has had a qualifier in every category. Also, some students have qualified for this meet more than once like junior Jacob Martella who will be traveling to this meet for the third consecutive time in his third year of high school. Martella has never advanced to the state competition, so he has made that his goal this year. Among the most surprising student advancing is Jaquala Wade who competed for the first time ever at the district meet and placed first in headline writing and third in editorial writing, advancing with Martella.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect at UIL, but I went there and did my best and placed,” Wade said. “I think UIL is a really cool thing because it gives the kids that only specialize in academics the chance to compete in something.”

As of now the qualifiers are all preparing for their upcoming competition. Last year Summit had no qualifiers for the state competition, so this year the effort will be to have as many as possible.
