Midterms After Winter Break are Getting Bad Reactions

Last year was the first year of having midterms after the break instead of before the break. The midterm schedule will be as followed: B-day review day will be Jan. 11, B-day exam day will be Jan. 12, A-day review day will be Jan. 13, and A-day exam day will be Jan. 14.

Last year, MISD moved midterms after winter break for the first time. They made the change because school started two weeks later than previous years.

“Because of the school starting later, the semester had to be finished after the break, therefore midterms were after winter break,” counselor, Mr. Klein said. “I personally think the exams should be before the break but we had to follow the state and districts’ rules.”

Many students do not like having midterms after winter break because they believe they forget a lot of information and cannot remember material for the test. Students would rather get the exams over with, that way they can relax over the break and not worry about studying.

“I would prefer to take them before the break, but I’m okay with it I guess,” sophomore Jascilyn Same said. “As long as I study really hard and get good grades on them it’s all good with me.”

Students aren’t the only ones that don’t like exams after winter break, teachers also feel that the exams should be taken before the break.

“I don’t like giving exams after winter break because I feel that students forget,” English teacher, Mrs. Dilday said. “Grades haven’t gone down because the exams are after the break, but it does force the students to study harder.”

The student’s break is a time for relaxing, not having to come back and take exams. The week the students get back, isn’t really a regular week, its a week for teachers to give extra review time for exams.

“The break ruins the student’s routine, so when they come back, I have to review more with my students so they remember the needed materials,” Math teacher, Mrs. Showers said.

Exams bring late nights, non-stop studying, and most of all, stress. Not only do students have to worry about acing their tests, they have to remember important information over the break for their exams.
