Next year Frontier High School will be opening inside Ben Barber and a lot of people are feeling uneasy about how restricted these new benefits are going to be. With only 200 students being accepted, is this new school really needed?

I have complete faith in this school producing well rounded individuals that are focused on their career, and are able to stretch beyond other students after high school. Frontier is giving students the opportunities that we often hear about in other districts but have failed to see in our own. It is going to be the best opportunity students have ever had in MISD. The concept of a school focused in on certain career pathways, with resources specifically designed for those careers, and classes that have a new way of teaching and studying will enable certain students to go farther with their lives, and really showcase what this district has to offer.

All students that participate in the program will be required to take part in an internship before they can graduate. Most college applications have a specific spot on their applications for students to put information about internships and most of us won’t have anything to put in that box, but at Frontier it is guaranteed that everyone will be able to put pen to paper when asked that question. Students will be held even more responsible for their school work and grades due to more college oriented teaching methods, and online courses that only get done if the student wants to do it.

To graduate from Frontier High School will be an amazing privilege and soon colleges will love seeing that high school name on applications.

The 200 student limit may be looked down upon, but in fact it is a blessing. There won’t be any crowded classrooms allowing teachers to be more focused on each students needs, studying will be easier and with less distractions, and how awesome would it be completely surrounded by people who are working towards the same goal as you?

I for one have wanted a place to study that has resources designed for my needs, along with the cozy comfort of home since high school started. The homework is always a stressful and sometimes there is way to much going on at home for me to be able to concentrate fully on homework there. Well, Frontier has thought of a solution for that. “The Cube” is going to be a cross between a study hall and a Starbucks. Saavy’s Bistro will have a coffee bar, wireless internet will be enabled throughout the school, couches will provide the perfect lounge, and it will be a great place to meet for group projects or study sessions. With a whole area dedicated to comfortable studying, it’s easy to see the benefits of attending this high school.

The biggest argument for students against Frontier High School is that there will be no athletic teams. Yup, that means no Friday night football, weekend tournaments, or team banquets. Where will this school get its spirit from? The perfect solution to this, is to simply root for all four MISD high schools. Why root for just one team when you can root for all four? By attending Frontier High School, every Friday night during football season you’ll have four game choices instead of just one, and every weekend you’ll have four times as many events than you did before. Honestly who can say that doesn’t sound sweet?

All in all, Frontier is a great idea and an amazing way to expand our horizons. I think it will be a great success as long as the students are up to the work load.
