Jags Fall to Lamar
.
Last night the varsity boys basketball team suffered a loss to Lamar. The score was close for the whole game, but in the end Lamar pulled out a four point lead to win the game. The final score was 58-62. This loss sets the Jags in third place behind Sam Houston in district 4-5A play.
“I think we deserved what we got,” head coach Jason Mutterer said. ” We didn’t play well as a team, and that hit us hard. We need to have more communication on the court. We know what we have to do, we just have to implement that on the floor.”
The Jags started out the first quarter struggling, and only scored 9 compared to Lamar’s 12. Neither team got a good lead in this quarter, and both teams defense were doing a good job of stopping the ball.
“The defense on the court started out okay, but once we hit the second half it just wasn’t there,” guard, Jaylon Butler said. ” We were just not there as a team. We needed more energy out there, but we didn’t have it.”
The Jags went into half time 18-22. Coming back in with the 4 points to make up the Jags came out strong, but so did Lamar. The defense from Lamar seemed to step up while Summit’s was losing energy.
“Tonight was to quiet,” point guard, Quentin Johnson said. ” We needed that energy and stamina, but we just didn’t have it. Tonight needed to be a team game, but it wasn’t there. This week we need to prepare and not be lazy if we want to get to district.”
In the fourth quarter both teams only gained leads of 2 or three points, but in the end Lamar hit a 3 pointer with a minute left and then recieved the ball and held it until Summit got the ball back at 20 seconds. Jags brought it into range, but then a personal foul was called sending Lamar to the free throw line. Lamar made both free throws making the game 58-62 which after after a 10 second half court game for Lamar turned into the final score.
The team wants to step up their practice this week so that they will be prepared for their next game. The next four games will be the determining factor of who makes playoffs and who doesn’t. The Jags will get back on the court to face Arlington this Friday at home for their third to last game.
